Our Turangi motel sits on the banks of the Tongariro River, only 30 metres from the world famous Bridge Pool. The Tongariro River is one of the top fly-fishing rivers in New Zealand, where you can catch both rainbow and brown trout all year ‘round.
We can also arrange boat trips on Lake Taupo where you can catch trout from the comfort of a launch (just don’t tell the fly-fishermen).

Trout Fishing in Winter
Winter in Tūrangi brings one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the annual trout spawning runs. From July through September, huge numbers of rainbow and brown trout surge upstream, offering anglers some of the most exciting fishing of the year. October often extends the season, giving fishermen even more opportunities. The Tongariro River, along with tributaries like Tauranga-Taupō and Waitahanui, becomes a hotspot for action, with trout in peak condition. Lake Rotopounamu
Tucked into the side of Mt Pihanga, Lake Rotopounamu—often called the “greenstone lake”—is a hidden treasure for nature lovers. The 5 km track begins with a short uphill climb before circling the lake, offering picnic areas, rest spots, and a main beach equipped with toilet facilities. Huka Falls & Aratiatia Rapids Track
This family-friendly grade 2–3 loop trail combines spectacular natural sights with accessible walking. Highlights include panoramic river views, the powerful Aratiatia Dam release, and lush native bush alongside a hidden geothermal stream. Starting at Huka Falls, you can either return the same way (14 km round trip, 7 km one way) or extend the loop across the river via the Aratiatia Track, linking to Wairakei Resort Track, Wairakei Tourist Track, and Café Track. From October to March, the floodgates at Aratiatia Dam open every two hours between 10 am and 4 pm, releasing a dramatic surge of water that transforms the narrow gorge into a roaring spectacle—an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
